Sewing Machine

On a previous post, I was talking about wanting to do some canvas work. I researched sewing machines that were popular and went ahead and ordered a Sailrite LSZ-1 sewing machine. It came in yesterday. I ordered some other accessories to go along with it and everything came in large boxes. The black transport case and the machine itself came in to individual boxes within a single large box. It was pretty big and heavy. Another box had accessories that I ordered along with it. I ordered a yard of 60" Marine Grade Sunbrella, Linen color. I got only one yard to start off with smaller projects at the moment as I learn the machine. I got a white 1" binding strip to go along with it for the edge to give it a nice finished look. At least, that's the idea. In order to cut Sunbrella, I ordered one of Sailrite's hot knives too.

It's a heavy machine. In the accessory kit I ordered included the heavier balance wheel and that is pretty heavy itself. First impressions, it looks like a good solid machine that will last some time.

  1. Nice! I'll be doing the same thing in about a year. Post a lot so I can learn! I assume you will take this with you when you head out?

    1. As long as I have the boat, I'm sure it won't be too far away. Nothing wrong with a little more ballast. lol

  2. Very nice kit. The hot knife is the only way to cut sunbrella.

  3. I chose the same color for my boat as well. The linen looks really nice and is great for biminis in the south where darker colors retain heat. The hot knife is a necessity for sure. I found the binding hard to sew when I was trying to mate the ends together on a sheet bag that I made ( http://bbs.trailersailor.com/forums/macgregor/index.cgi?read=47738,brokenotbroken ) Take a look at the left of the image and you'll see what I'm talking about. Anyway, once you get to sewing let me know how the LSZ-1 does as I've been considering getting one but man they are awfully expensive. BTW, Don Casey's Canvaswork & Sail Repair is a good starter book. -david

    1. That's a nice looking bag. I'll see how the binding works out. I got a 5ft piece to try out. While I like the blue, it just seems too dark to me for warmer weather. I like how the linen looks so far.

Good tip on the book. I was just thinking of what books would be useful, Thanks!
